Broccolikoralen zijn struikachtig tot boomachtig en komen voor in rustige wateren die blootstaan aan sterke stromingen (maar niet aan hoge golven). We zien deze zachte koralen vaak tijdens duikexcursies vanaf Koh Lanta bij Koh Haa en Hin Muang.
Zachte koralen van deze familie komen overal voor, maar zijn vooral in overvloed te vinden bij Hin Muang en Hin Daeng en rond diepere gebieden bij Koh Haa. Ze worden soms ook wel ‘boomkoralen’ genoemd.
Zachte koralen van deze familie zijn zacht en rubberachtig. Een dikke ‘hoofdstam’ hecht zich aan één kant aan een hard oppervlak, met aan de andere kant vele kleine takken.
De stam van de kolonie heeft geen poliepen; alle poliepen zitten gegroepeerd aan het uiteinde van de takken. De poliepen zijn overdag meestal gesloten, waardoor deze koralen de naam ‘broccolikoralen’ hebben gekregen vanwege hun gelijkenis met de groente.
's Nachts komen de poliepen tevoorschijn en strekken ze hun tentakels uit om zich te voeden.

The genus Dendronephthya are widely known as The Carnation Corals or Tree Corals. Dendronephthya soft corals occur in more colours and colour combinations than any other soft genus. The colours range from yellow, orange, bright red, purple, pink, green, white, and countless combinations of these.
The colony stalk may also have several combinations of colours. Bright red or pink corals of this genus are sometimes known as Strawberry Corals.
Carnation Corals corals have upright stalks, and the branches have bushy groupings of polyps at the end. The coral polyp is the 'flowery' part of the coral colony, with each polyp attached to its neighbours by living tissue, the 'stem'.
Carnation Corals are nocturnal filter feeders and do not depend on photosynthesis. Because Dendronephthya corals do not have any zooxanthellae they depend on large quantities of zooplankton and phytoplankton to survive.
