What does a PADI Divemaster do?

As a PADI Divemaster you can Work at local dive centers, on live-aboard dive boats, yachts and at exotic resort locations.

Here at Dive & Relax, as with many dive operators throughout the world, our Divemasters lead certified divers on dive trips almost every day, assisting guests, providing advice to divers, assisting with the running of the boat and the dive shop, preparing equipment, assisting the boat crew, working in the dive shop and many other varied activities essential to the smooth operation of a dive resort.

In addition to being involved with the day-to-day activities of the dive operation, you can assist PADI Instructors with students, lead PADI Scuba Divers on guided dive tours, teach and certify PADI Skin Divers, teach PADI Discover Snorkeling programs, conduct PADI Scuba Review programs for certified divers. You can also lead certified divers on Discover Local Diving experiences. Finally you can teach Emergency First Response programs after successful completion of an Emergency First Response Instructor course.

What are the options available to me?

We offer both PADI options for training and certification as a Divemaster, the Divemaster Internship (Option 1) and the Practical Assesment (Option 2).

Option 1

The Divemaster Internship will probably give you the best possible training due to the length of time you spend with us. In return for free Divemaster (DM) training, you are expected to work for 3 months unpaid at the dive shop where you will gain a wealth of experience working as a DM and also have mentoring, advice and assistance available to you throughout the entire internship period to help improve your skills, knowledge and confidence.

You should expect the initial training to typically take 6 to 8 weeks, depending on your level of diving and learning abilities, with a further 3 month period of unpaid work following this.

Option 2

The Divemaster Practical Assesment option allows you to pay for the DM course and complete your DM training in a similar typical 6 to 8 week period of time as the Internship, however since you will not have the opportunity of spending 3 months working with us to refine and build your skills and knowledge, there are some additional assesments required prior to certification and the actual time required to complete the course will vary depending on each individual.

Note that the 6 to 8 week training period suggested above is based on our experience of prior candidates and will vary depending on each individual, including the number of dives you have already logged. The suggested time period is given as a rough guide only.
