Diving and Snorkeling Koh Phi Phi and the Bida Islands

Koh Phi Phi Leh

If you've seen the film "The Beach", you might understand the magical effect the Phi Phi islands have on visitors. Stunning limestone cliffs covered in an untouched jungle, breathtaking turquoise lagoons and of course a spectacular underwater world. Koh Phi Phi has around 12 dive sites to choose from.

The dive sites around the Phi Phi islands offer overhangs, swim-throughs, canyons and gorges, hosting some large Gorgonians and amazing colourful soft corals and anemones. A huge diversity of marine life can be seen here, from Cleaner Shrimps and Anemone Crabs to Bearded Scorpion-fish, colourful Lionfish and brave little Clownfish.

Our favourite site at Phi Phi Leh is Palong, which lies just to the north of Maya Bay and offers two dives.

The first dive to the north of Palong Bay is where we can regularly see many black tip reef sharks on the coral reef, particularly in the shallows, with leopard sharks sometimes found slightly deeper, resting on the sand.

The second dive at Palong is to the south of the bay, heading towards Maya Bay. Half-way along this reef is a series of excellent swim-throughs and small tunnels on the rock formations, however we really visit Palong South to dive with the hawksbill turtles which live along this reef and can be regularly seen on our dives here.

Koh Bida Nok & Koh Bida Nai

One of the main attractions of the Bida islands (South of Koh Phi Phi) is the Leopard Shark. Although the Leopard Shark bears the name 'shark' it is a very docile and curious creature. Leopard Sharks spend most of the day resting on the sandy bottom, and, like most sharks, are most active and do their hunting at night.

The Bida Islands probably offer the best diving and snorkeling of all the sites in the Phi Phi Islands, with plenty of reef fish, and often baby black tip reef sharks in the shallow bay at Koh Bida Nok. We can also often find smaller creatures here such as sea horses, as well as the large schools of snapper and other tropical fish such as puffers, butterfly fish, groupers, flute-mouths, angel fish, clown fish, lion fish, sweet lips and many others inhabiting the reefs around these islands.

The stunning beaches and an amazing underwater world of Koh Phi Phi, make it a perfect dive and snorkel destination.
