About Koh Lanta:

The tropical islands of Koh Lanta are located in the Andaman Sea, on the southwest coast of Thailand. Although tourism is increasing every year, Koh Lanta with its picturesque Andaman coastline, manages to keep her laid-back atmosphere, natural beauty and friendliness. Koh Lanta actually consists of 52 islands, 15 of which are under the control of the Koh Lanta National Marine Park. 12 islands are habited from which the two major islands are; Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. [Map]

Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller of the two islands and doesn't have tourist facilities, but the old life style and traditional styled houses can still be seen and make it worth a visit.

Koh Lanta Yai is approximately 32 km long and 6 km wide. It has a diverse cultural mix with Thai-Muslim, Thai-Chinese and the original Sea Gypsies living together on the island.

The 20,000 residents of Koh Lanta have a traditional economy of fishing, coconut plantations, rubber plantations, rice paddies, prawn farming and fruit. This economy is now supplemented with the growing tourist industry.

Koh Lanta, due to her location, is one of the best dive destinations in the Andaman Sea. There are a number of spectacular dive sites available within a very close distance: Koh Phi Phi, Koh Haa, The King Cruiser Wreck in combination with Shark Point or Anemone Reef. Best of all is Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, for which Koh Lanta is the closest base-point.

Koh Lanta has even more to offer: explore Lanta's caves, wander along kilometers of white sandy beaches, trek through the unspoiled rainforest of the National Marine Park , venture on the back of an elephant for an exiting ride or simply relax in your hammock with a good book. Live your own dream under the tropical sun.

Visa:

On arrival at the immigration you will receive a free stamp in your passport that will allow you to stay up to 30 days. Longer visas and double or triple entrees are available at the Thai embassy in your country before arrival, but prices may vary and are better be checked by yourself.

Currency:

The local currency in Thailand is the Thai Baht. For up-to-date exchange rates have a look at our Currency Converter. Most hotels, larger restaurants and shops accept the major credit cards, some will even accept US$ and Euros. Several ATM machines are available all over the island, accepting all kind of credit cards from around the world. Smaller shops, restaurants and taxi drivers will only accept Thai Baht, so it is handy to have local money in your pocket.

Bartering is a very common habit in Thailand, but when prices are displayed or there is a price-tag, the price is non-negotiable. If you have to barter, a few words of Thai and a big smile can bring the prices down by 20-30%.

Health:

Thailand's hospitals are excellent in the mayor tourist areas with the most modern equipment. On the islands the hospitals can be a little bit more basic, but the necessary medications will be available. Pharmacies are very good and will have most of the medications you will be looking for.
All the ice and bottled drinking water is manufactured by the government-regulated facilities and are safe for consummation. Tap water is in general safe for brushing your teeth but not for consummation. Make sure you drink a lot of bottled water to prevent dehydration. Even though most of the country is free of cholera, malaria and other serious diseases, check if your vaccinations are up-to-date. For divers it would be wise to have a medical check up before you leave your country (this is not mandatory).

Language:

Thai is the official language in Thailand although many Thais who work in the tourist industry speak some English. Make sure you speak slowly and clearly without difficult words and you will be perfectly understood. If you are able to speak a few words of Thai you will find the locals even friendlier. Thai people believe that the least we can do for each other is to smile and be polite, so stay friendly and resolve misunderstandings with humour and a large smile and you will have a great time.
Thailand is famous for the friendly people and the large smiles.
